As during the first stages of the Catholic church there weren´t many rules nor established norms for those who wanted to become monks or priests, monasticism was a current that started by peope that wanted to commit their entire lifes to God and the variety of ways to fulfill this was different eastern monks enrolled and gave their lifes fighting for Christ, and the western were more of a converting and evangelizing force, this is what they mean when they refer to them as "Athletes".
