You may encounter this term when you take a patient's blood pressure. When the reading tells, for example, 110/60, it records the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The lower number (60) is the minimum pressure when the heart is at rest - this is the diastolic pressure. The higher number (110) is the maximum pressure when the heart contracts -- this is the systolic pressure.
