Martin Luther King Jr. uses figurative language strategically throughout his letter to promote equality. How does the following instance help accomplish his purpose of challenging the church leaders to take action against racial injustice? While church leaders were deferring action, so Martin Luther King Jr. was attempting to explain the urgency of the situation using the metaphor of "stinging darts of segregation", comparing segregation to stinging darts, as well as the pain suffered by the victims.  It is an effective literary tool that save monotonous explanations.

By using the phrase "stinging darts of segregation", Martin Luther King Jr allows the audience to understand how the discrimination he faced effected him. Since he's aiming the sentence at people who haven't been discriminated for their race, his use of a metaphor enables these people to understand.
