Tom Godwin’s science-fiction story “The Cold Equations” takes place entirely aboard the Stardust, an Emergency Dispatch Ship (EDS) headed for the frontier planet Woden with a load of desperately needed medical supplies. The story's fifth paragraph sets up the first part by including a quotation from "Paragraph L, Section 8, of Interstellar Regulations: Any stowaway discovered in an EDS shall be jettisoned immediately following discovery." Readers of "The Cold Equations" learn that Marilyn has not seen her beloved brother for ten years, and because she has not traveled before, she is unaware that "the laws of the space frontier must, of necessity, be as hard and relentless as the environment that gave them birth."

The arising conflict between the pilot and Marilyn Lee Cross ensued when Marilyn stowed away on the Emergency Dispatch Ship.
Unfortunately, the EDS was not built to accommodate an additional weight apart from the crew and the medical supplies it was carrying.
Secondly, the pilot knew that for the crew to survive, Marilyn must be jettisoned. This decision confused Marilyn greatly since she did not think that her death was deserved.
Thirdly, when Marilyn had accepted her fate, Barton the pilot wanted to save her at all cost and as long as it was possible. But he could not risk the loss of the crew and the medical supplies for the Colonists for the sake of Marilyn, who was not factored into the Cold Equations for the EDS.
Thus, "The Cold Equations" did not create allowances for plan deviations.
