When his cousin, Mary, comes into the room, she is very cheerful and happy. He doesn't want her to ruin his sad move so he gets up and leaves so he can stay inside his "clouds and darkness."

These lines from the excerpt explicitly and directly states that Tom is content with still being sad and does not want to cheer up.

As a result of the given excerpt, we can see that Tom is in a sad mood and is holed up in his room and when his relative Mary comes into the room and is in a happy and lively mood, Tom asks her to leave, spo he does not get infected by her happiness.
