karen is thinking of two numbers. thier difference is 9 and thier sum is 17. what are the numbers?

It's pretty hard to tell what somebody else is thinking.
But the numbers could very well be  13  and  4 .

Look here:

                 13 - 4  =  9
                 13 + 4 = 17

They certainly work.
