There were many different changes happening to the US government between 1789 and 1849. In 1789 George Washington got elected as the first president and was the one to set up a cabinet type of government, the cabinet included a departments of state, treasury and war as well as an attorney general. The Justice Department was officially created in 1870 making Alexander Hamilton as Treasury Secretary. In the 1790's the first party system emerged with Hamilton in the Federalist party and Thomas Jefferson in the Republican Party. In the early 1800's the Louisiana Purchase happened which helped expand land in the West belonging to the United States. Additionally slavery changed between the north and the south, since the north was industrialized and the south was agricultural and rural due to the farming lands.
