Good morning.

The maximum and minimum resultant happens when both vectors are in the same line. For maximum, put them pointing to the same place. For minumum, they point opposite ways.

Therefore, the minimum resultant is calculated with a subtraction:

[tex]\mathsf{F_{min} = 5 - 8 = -3 \ N}[/tex]

The absolute value of the minimum forece is 3 N. The signal only says if it is in the same directions as the orientation adopted.

I hope it helps :)

The resultant force acting on a body could be described as the net force which is exerted on the body. For a minimum resultant to occur, then the forces are acting in opposite direction. Hence, the minimum resultant force possible for two forces of 5-N and 8-N is 3N in the direction of the 8N force.

Given the forces acting on a body :

  • Force, F1 = 5N
  • Force, F2 = 8N ; acting in opposite direction

  • Resultant force = F1 - F2

Resultant Force = 5N - 8N = -3N

Therefore, the minimum resultant force will be 3N in the direction of the 8N force (greater force applied).
