According to the energy pathways, organisms are classified as either autotrophs or heterotrophs. Autotrophs are organisms that are capable of producing their own food with the aid of the energy from the sun. This process is also called the photosynthesis. Example of this type of organism are our plants.

Heterotrophs, on the other hand, is not capable of making their own food that is why they depend on others. These are both plants and animals that consume other plants or animals for nourishment.

In other words, the autotrophs are the producers and the heterotrophs are the consumers.
