Some types of bacteria and yeast do not need oxygen to survive. These organisms
make energy from food using a process called anaerobic respiration. In this process,
organisms break down glucose (C6H1206) into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and ethanol
(C₂H60). People can use organisms that carry out anaerobic respiration to make
certain types of food and drink and to turn plants into fuel.
