The iron curtain referred to the way in which the country was under enforcement of the Soviets. It was in reference to the tanks and military and everything going on. It's like saying, you were hiding behind a curtain. The East was specifically under control of the Soviets at the end of WWII. So it refers to that and the fact that it harmed them.
