All the loves of Apollo show that love is elusive, even to a god. Even though Apollo is beautiful and powerful, he can't make Daphne love him. To her, it is more acceptable to turn into a laurel tree than to surrender to him against her own will. The mighty god can't even protect his beloved Hyacinthus from the flying discus he had thrown. Although he is not a mortal, he suffers because of unrequited or betrayed love; but his vengeance is all the more fatal, making things worse for those who are subjects of his love.
