Before I answer the question remember what a homologous structure is. It is a structure that is present in one species and shows relation with others.
The flippers of a whale are in a way a homologous structure. The flipper if xrayed, shows up like a hand with five appendages. Now we have a similar structure. What this proves is that we diverged from whales at some point in the evolutionary tree (seeing as how we are a different species from whales).

Homologous Structure are structures that are similar between organism that are very different and show that similar bone pattern could point from a common ancestor from early on
