The literary movement at the end of the nineteenth century that helped
shape American theater is modernism. Modernism is a literary era that
started near the end of the 19th century and quickly became quite
relevant in the artistic world, and thus influenced many cultures and
literary genres. It lasted until 1940s, when it was replaced by an era
that is still ongoing today - postmodernism.
