Gorbachev was elected by the Congress of peoples deputies to the newly created an office of President in February 1990. Many people worry that he had too much power and that he might become a dictator. During his last year in office, Gorbachev rejected reforms that he had previously supported. The president’s popularity was his prime ministry Boris Yeltsin gained support. Yeltsin called for a rally of support. This was perceived by some to be a challenge to Gorbachev‘s authority.
