On the globe and on the map, there are imaginary lines called latitudes and longitudes. Longitudes run North South while latitudes run East West.

Another name for latitudes is parallels. It is because all latitudes run parallel to the equator and they are full circles. Their degree measure starts from the equator which is 0 degree. The north pole is 90 degree latitude in the North and the south pole is 90 degree latitude in the south. Thus the numbers for parallels run from equator to the north and from equator to the south. Numbers to the East and the West refer to longitudes and not latitudes.
