The Greeks contributed to democracy primarily through being the foundation of Western Civilization democracy. It all started in Greece and mainly in the city of Athens. Cleisthenes, who was a statesman, is considered as the founder of democracy in Athens. Cleisthenes introduced insightful reforms. These reforms caused democracy to exist as a system of government for the first time worldwide. In fact, the word “democracy” comes from two Greek words.
The contributions to democracy from the Greco-Roman include:
- The Idea of self-rule government.
- Active participation by citizens.
- Replacement of government.
- It should be noted that democracy in ancient Greece was the first form of self-rule government. This system was vital to the development of democracy.
- Democracy was coined from two Greek words that are demos (people) and kratos (rule). Democracy allows for the active participation of the people in the country. They elect their leaders who oversee the affairs of the nation on their behalf.
- During the Greco-Roman era, people removed the government through uprising or revolution. This can be seen today as a government can be impeached or voted out.
