The Mali Empire lasted as the most powerful in the West African region between 1235 and 1353. The empire was also dependent on the gold trade, and was famous under rulers like Mansa Musa, and Sundiata.

The Songhai Empire which lasted as the most powerful empire in the West African region in the 1400s was famous under the likes of Sunni Ali, and Askia Muhammed. The Songhai Empire was later conquered by the Morrocan forces who used guns and gun powders to defeat the empire.
