Writing with Dialogue



My brother Patrick sat on his bed and waited patiently for me to begin. As I held the speech in my right hand, I felt the page crinkle between my fingertips. I read my speech loudly, but my brother shook his head disapprovingly. He told me I didn’t sound confident enough. With a heavy heart, I knew I was in for a long day of practicing.





Write a few lines of dialogue based on this narrative.

"Okay, Jayden. I'm ready whenever you are," Patrick said. I stood in front of my brother in our shared bedroom, with the draft of my speech in my hand. I nervously rustled the paper between my fingertips. "Hey, bro, I don't have all day!" he added impatiently. "All right. Here goes nothing," I replied, and after a long pause, I read him my speech. "Here's the thing, Jayden," Patrick began, "If you don't believe in yourself, who will? Read with more confidence, and you'll sound more believable."
