To Marx, encounter among a small number of capitalists and a large number of workers would divide society. He denoted to this large number of workers as proletariat. The proletariat in marxist theory, is the societal group that does not have possession of the means of production and whose only means of survival is to sell their labor power for a wage or salary. Proletarians are wage workers however some mention to those who obtain salaries as the salariat. For marx, wage labor may include receiving a salary rather than a wage per se. Marxism sees the proletariat and bourgeoisie as inhabiting differing points as workers automatically wish their wages to be as high as likely while owners and their proxies wish for wages to be as low as likely.
