Active transport is a process in which there is movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration, against the concentration gradient. Active transport uses cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and transport or carrier proteins to achieve this movement. The two types of active transport are; primary active transport (uses ATP), and secondary active transport (uses an electrochemical gradient).
