India
Chandragupta Maurya was the founder of the Maurya Empire in Ancient India. It was one of the largest empires ever in the Indian Subcontinent, and yet Chandragupta one day decided to give up his life as the ruler and became a Jain monk (in the religion Jainism). He renounced all his wealth and power and went with other Jain monks into the Deccan region (now Karnataka), where he settled until his death.
