In chemistry, to be classified as an organic substance, a substance must contain  carbon atoms

The Organic substance must contain at least Carbon and Hydrogen.

Organic substance:

These are the compounds in which Carbon is covalently linked to the other elements such as Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.

For example-

  • Amino acids are made up of C, H,O, N, etc.
  • Carbohydrates are mainly composed of C, H, and O.
  • Lipids or Oil are generally made up of Carbon and Hydrogen only.

Therefore, the Organic substance must contain at least Carbon and Hydrogen.
