Augustus was the first leader of the Roman Empire. He is still remembered as one of the most influential, effective and controversial leader in human history. The era of ‘Relative Peace’ was started by Augustus only which was named as Pax Ramona. During that time, The Romans considered office of the Emperor to be distinct and that from the King. Augustus as being the first emperor refused his recognition as a ‘Monarch’. Although, there was a possibility that Augustus could claim that his power was authentically republican but his successors were not able to make this claim convincingly. But, for around initial three hundred years, there were a lot of efforts made by these emperors starting from Augustus to Diocletian to portray themselves as the leader of the Republic. Augustus took charge of the offices which were of the highest importance to the Republic. He kept all the important decision making powers to himself so that no one else can have similar aspiration to lead the people and become a King. There are many historians who believe that Augustus period was Principate as compared to period of Diocletian. Augustus was the first leader to have absolute power of Rome.
