So let's write this out
-9^2 + (-8)^2 -1^2=
So order of operations (PEMDAS) since their is no parenthesis we move to exponents -9^2=81, -8^2=64, and 1^2=1. So now we have 81+64-1. OK now since their is no multiplication or division we move to addition and subtraction. Now like multiplication and division we addition and subtraction from left to right (not addition first then subtraction). Since the first part is 81+64 we do that which is 145 then we do minus 1 which is 144.
