Carbon is one of the main elements of organic matter constituting living beings. It is the plants that fix it during their growth, from the CO2 present in dissolved form in the oceans or in gaseous form in the atmosphere. It is then either released into the air or water by respiration, or sequestered more or less long in the soil and seabed.
