When a base is added to water, hydronium ions decrease
Explanation
- Base dissociate to give out OH- ions
- In the other hand ,when water (H2O) dissociate it give out hydronium ions ( H3O+) and OH- ions
- when base is added to water more OH- it led to addition of more Oh- ions hence H3O+ decrease.
When we add a base to the water, then the concentration of H⁺ ions is decrease.
What is base?
According to the Arrhenius theory of acids and base, bases are those substances which gives hydroxide ions (OH⁻) to the solutions.
As we know that water (H₂O) molecules dissociates into hydronium ions (H⁺) ion and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). So when we add base in the water then this base gives hydroxide ion to the solution as a result of which concentration of OH⁻ ions increases in the solution and concentration of H⁺ ions decreases.
Hence, option (2) is correct i.e. decrease.
