After the Declaration of Independence, citizens were able to govern themselves.
One of the biggest causes of the Declaration of Independence were the unfair taxation policies implemented by King George III and the English parliament. American colonists, who did not have a representative in the English parliament, were extremely angry with the fact that they had no control over what laws were passed in the colonies.
In order to change this, the colonists declared their independence from Great Britian. This meant that the citizens of America now had the chance to develop their own government structure, their own laws, and their own taxation policies.
