A group of campers hiked for 5 3/4 hours today and 6 3/4 hours yesterday. How many hours did they hike in all?

First you can turn the fractions into improper fractions.
5 3/4 = 23/4    6 3/4= 27/4 
Add numerators, denominators stay the same.
23 + 27= 50
50/4
You can either leave it or simplify
Simplified:
50/4 = 12 1/2
