To determine whether two proportions are equal or nit.
Consider for example:
[tex] \frac{3}{8} = \frac{14}{32} [/tex]
If both proportions are equal, then cross multiplying then will yeild equal quantities.
i.e. 3(32) = 14(8)
or 96 = 112
Since both quantities are not equal, thus, the proportion is false.
