Dickinson is writing about success in the more conventional way—as something that we all want—while Service is questioning whether or not one should desire success at all. Dickinson comments that success is truly valued by those who have failed to achieve it, and Service comments that those who are successful are not nearly as happy as those who fail to achieve success. Although both are universal themes that cross cultural boundaries, they seem to contradict one another.
