Short phrases as well as Punctuation can be used to build suspense in a story. By using short, simple sentences the reader is forced to stop the thought and start the next one which allows the reader to digest just bits of information and visualize what is happening the story in a much more isolated way. Additionally, this same effect can be created by using short phrases that make the reader interested such as a character's dialogue as a response to other stimuli.
