After the Emancipation Proclamation, the central goals of the Civil War (1861-1865) were to preserve the Union and end slavery. Under President Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) declared that all slave people within the rebellious states would become free. However, slaves' freedom depended upon the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation reinforced the idea that the war for the Union had become a war for freedom; consequently, the abolition of slavery was a war aim.
