The word we always associate with lipids is that lipids are fats. Lipids are hydrophobic molecules which is insoluble in water. Their hydrophobic nature is because of the hydrocarbon chain in its structure.

Lipids performs many functions in the biological system. It makes phospholipid bilayer of the plasma membrane in the cell, helps to transport lipophilic molecules, stored in the body as fat and serve as an energy reserve, make hormones, etc.

There are many forms of lipids like fatty acids, triacylglycerol, wax, phospholipids, glycolipids. The simplest lipid are fatty acids which is 4-36 carbon long. It is present in complex lipids as a constituent.
