Be certain to copy down the instructions.  I'd bet the instructions ask you to solve the given equation for the value of b.

Multiplying as indicated:

8b + 8 + 4 = 6b - 24
Combining like terms:  2b = -36.   solving for b, b=-18.  You should check this answer to ensure that it makes the original equation true.
distribute the 8 to whatever is in the parentheses. So 8b+8+4. Same on the other side 6b-24. So 8b+12=6b-24. Subtract 6b on both sides. Subtract 12 on both sides. You get 2b=-36. Divide both sides by 2. b=-18
