As you may already know, fossils are the remains or preserved traces of animals, plants or other living things in rocks. As the years go by, the fossils accumulate in ever deeper layers within a rock. The deeper the older layer the fossil is. If we opened a trench in the ground and observed the characteristics of the fossils, we would realize that fossils in deeper layers exhibit more primitive characteristics than fossils in the deeper layers.

From this we can conclude that as terrestrial plants become more complex, so does animal life, since fossils in more superficial layers have more complex characteristics and are the closest characteristics of today's animals and plants.
