The president thought that this would heal the wounds of the civil war and help give America a name on a national scale. Some of the things that the papers reported were Cuban oppression, stating that the country was going through inhumane treatment like torture and r ape by the Spanish forces. They also told stories where Cuban people were left dead on the side of the road and pillaged by the Spanish forces.
