The connection is that both Gregor and Grete go through a metamorphosis. Gregor physically changes into an insect. Previously being the breadwinner for his family he is now unable to continue with that role. This forces Grete to transform into a productive adult to fill his role. The physical changes of Gregor are contrasted and reflected in the emotional changes in Grete.
