Oklahoma Land Rush

Many people often inquire what "Boomer Sooner" means, especially those who have spent any time around Oklahoma Sooner fans. They are incredibly enthusiastic football fans. As it turns out, the University of Oklahoma carries rich history in the school chant. Interestingly, the terms, used almost always together, have very different meanings.
In 1889, settlers organized to stake claims to Oklahoma's land. The gun would fire at high noon on April 22 at which time, the land was available. "Boomer" refers to the people who left when the gun was fired. "Sooner" refers to those who left prior to the gun being fired thereby giving them an advantage to claim the most desirable property.
