The biological function of penicillin primarily stems from the reactivity of the cyclic amide functional group also known as the β-lactam ring from the penicillin molecular structure. Attached is an image of the penicillin molecule and in red is the ring. This ring is the reactive portion because it has the ability to binding to the enzyme DD-transpeptidase, blocking it. This enzyme is important because it is involved in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.
