One trick I use is to see whether the sentence contain 'was+verb' or 'by somebody', because usually they exist in passive sentences

In a passive sentence, the doer of the action is kept at the place of object while the receiver of the action is kept at the place of subject.  

On the other hand,  in an active sentence the doer of the action is the subject of the sentence while the  receiver of the action is object of the sentence.

For example –  

Active Voice

Ram gave a pen to Shyam

Ram is the subject while Shivam is the object

Passive Voice

A pen was given to Shyam by Ram
