When I look at the answer choices, choice A would make sense for the first sentence, but not the rest. Choice B is supported by the part of the passage that says, "...I am weightless again, flying past the other runners". The choice C isn't supported whatsoever because the passage does not say whether or not Squeaky wins, nor does it talk about working hard to prepare for the race. The choice D is supported by the positive self-talk and the resulting physical response (running faster) that the passage describes. This is why I believe D is the best answer.
D. Success is possible if one truly believes in oneself.
D. Success is possible if one truly believes in oneself.
The theme that is shown most clearly in the excerpt is:
D. Success is possible if one truly believes in oneself.
- "Raymond's Run" is a short story by Toni Cade Bambara. The narrator of story is Hazel, whose nickname is Squeaky because of her voice.
- One of the main themes in the story is the power of self-confidence. Squeaky is the proof that, if one believes in oneself, success is possible.
- She is just a young girl, but she is determined. Unlike others, Squeaky does not pretend she does not care. She studies, she practices, she always does her best.
- The excerpt is describing the moment when she competes against her classmates. She is about to start running and, as we can see, she is giving herself quite a confidence booster:
". . . Squeaky, you must win, you must win, you are the fastest thing in the world, you can even beat your father up Amsterdam if you really try."
- And she does win! All the time practicing, all the self-talk for confidence - it all results in success!
- With the information above in mind, we can choose letter D as the best option. The excerpt develops the theme that success is possible if one truly believes in oneself.
