You earn $9 per hour babysitting. This is $2 more than what you earned per hour last year. What did you earn per hour last year?

Last year I earned x dollars per hour.
$2 more than x is x + 2.

x + 2 = 9

Solve for x by subtracting 2 from both sides.

x = 7

Last year I earned $7 per hour.
