In an SATB choir, the sopranos (women) sing the highest notes and the altos (women) sing the lower notes for a normal woman's range, but not the lowest notes in the choir - really, it would be the second highest notes when thinking of the whole choir. The tenors (men) sing higher notes from the normal man's range, singing the third highest notes of the choir. The basses (men) are those that sing the lowest notes in the choir. A bass's vocal range may go from the second E below middle C to the E above middle C.
