Since I haven't read the story, I cannot say for sure, but I'd say the answer is time. Because each time section breaks within a text are used, it is usually done so to indicate a shift in time, that another scene is approaching and thus time needs to be changed. It is used to break your perception of time, and to slowly/or suddenly lead you into another time necessary for the plot to continue.
