A comet is not the same thing as an asteroid. This is because of their composition, or basically what they are made up of. Asteroids are made up of rocky material and metals such as platinum. Comets are also made up of rocky material, but instead of metals, they are made up of ice and dust. A major similarity between Asteroids and Comets is that they were formed about 4.5 billion years ago. To put that to scale, that is about the age of Earth, which is also about 4.54 billion years old.
