Lincoln was totally opposed to slavery's expansion during this period. He, unlike many of the other candidates, did not warm to the idea of popular sovereignty and "letting the people decide." He felt this was part of the idea behind everyone being "equal": this meant that everyone in the country was afforded these protections, not simply those who were white.
