The compromise of 1850 took on Texas' debts and granted popular sovereignty in New Mexico and Utah. It also admitted California into the Union as a free state. This dealt with the issue of slavery because it kept the free and slave states equal, pleased the upset Texas state, and allowed freedom of choice in the territories that were split in their decision on whether to be a slave or free state.
