The work of John Locke tells the situation where people lived before the existence of the laws and the constituted state. It was the "state of nature" where humid life was wild, as are animals. In the state of nature, strong and intelligent men could use force to kill and enslave the weak. So there was no guarantee of freedom, property, even if you were strong, because at any moment another stronger could attack you.

Locke narrates this stage of humanity to explain the constitution of governments. According to the author, men would enter into an agreement and institute a state with laws, where all should obey, in exchange for security. This work is called: The Social Contract.
