The Court overturned Miranda’s conviction because he had not been informed of his rights prior to his confession of a crime. As a result of this decision,the Court devised statements that the police are required to give a suspect before questioning him or her about a crime. This statement, called the Miranda warning, includes the following: “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.”
